Southwest Wilderness 3-Day Photography Tour

Melaleuca • Bathurst Harbour | 26th – 28th March 2029 | 3 Days / 2 Nights | Just 6 Places

Experience the Untamed Southwest of Tasmania

Some places aren't simply visited. They're experienced.

Join us on an extraordinary 3-day, 2-night photography adventure deep into the remote Southwest Wilderness of Tasmania.

Our destination is Melaleuca and Bathurst Harbour, one of Australia's most isolated and spectacular wilderness regions. Surrounded by rugged mountains, ancient forests, wild beaches, pristine waterways and vast untouched landscapes, this is a place where photography becomes a true wilderness experience.

With just six places available, this is an intimate small-group adventure designed for photographers who want to experience one of Tasmania's most remarkable landscapes without the crowds.

Adventure Tier 2

This tour involves easy to moderate walking and is suited to photographers with a reasonable level of fitness and mobility.

The Journey Is Part of the Adventure

Getting to the Southwest Wilderness is an experience in itself.

We'll depart from Cambridge Airport in Hobart and fly by private charter to Melaleuca, deep in the heart of Tasmania's Southwest.

Flying over this remote landscape provides an incredible perspective that few people ever get to experience.

Keep your camera ready as we fly over some of Tasmania's most spectacular wilderness landmarks, including:

  • Federation Peak

  • The Western Arthur Range

  • Precipitous Bluff

  • Rugged Southern Ocean coastline

  • Vast untouched wilderness

The flight offers a unique opportunity to see Tasmania from above before we land at one of the most remote settlements in the state.

This isn't just a photography tour. It's an adventure from the moment we take off.

Welcome to Melaleuca

Deep within the Southwest National Park lies the remote wilderness outpost of Melaleuca, surrounded by an extraordinary landscape of mountains, waterways, forests and coastline.

From here we'll explore the surrounding wilderness and the spectacular Bathurst Harbour region.

The area is renowned for its remarkable isolation, pristine environment and unique Tasmanian landscapes.

This is a place where the scenery changes constantly.

Ancient Huon Pine forests give way to open beaches. Mountains rise dramatically from dark waterways. Mist can settle across the landscape, while changing weather can transform the entire scene within minutes.

For photographers, the opportunities are almost endless.

What We'll Photograph

Bathurst Harbour

Explore the spectacular waterways and shoreline of Bathurst Harbour, looking for reflections, mountain landscapes, intimate details and changing light.

Ancient Huon Pine Forests

Walk through some of Tasmania's remarkable ancient forests and photograph the textures, patterns and atmosphere of the Southwest wilderness.

Celery Top Islands

Discover the distinctive islands and waterways of Bathurst Harbour, providing opportunities for wide-angle landscapes and intimate compositions.

Old River

Explore the waterways and surrounding wilderness of the Old River, with opportunities for reflections, wildlife and atmospheric landscape photography.

Remote Beaches

Experience beaches far removed from civilisation and photograph the raw beauty of Tasmania's remote southern wilderness.

Wildlife

Keep your camera ready for the unique wildlife of the Southwest, including the possibility of spotting the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot and a variety of native birds and animals.

Aboriginal Heritage

The Southwest contains important Aboriginal cultural heritage, including middens and other evidence of thousands of years of connection with this landscape.

We will experience these places respectfully and follow all relevant access and conservation guidelines.

Photography Opportunities

The Southwest Wilderness is particularly rewarding for photographers who enjoy working with changing conditions.

Depending on the weather, we may photograph:

  • Moody mountain landscapes

  • Reflections across Bathurst Harbour

  • Ancient forests

  • Coastal landscapes

  • Remote beaches

  • Wildlife

  • Waterways and islands

  • Mist and changing weather

  • Long exposures

  • Intimate landscape compositions

  • Sunrise and sunset opportunities

  • Night skies and astrophotography, when conditions allow

The emphasis isn't on rushing from one location to another.

We'll take the time to look, compose and make the most of the conditions.

Southwest Wilderness Camp

Accommodation is comfortable but deliberately rustic, allowing you to experience the environment rather than simply observe it from a distance.

★★★★★

Cam is a very experienced photographer who is passionate about helping others develop their understanding of cameras and how to take the best photos possible!! During my 5 day trip to The Tarkine area of Tasmania with Cam’s tour group, I found Cam to be a fun, well organised guide who had a deep understanding of many facets of photography. I would definitely consider doing another trip with Cam!
